PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

A psychological or psycho-educational assessment typically includes a review of academic and medical records, a detailed interview with the client, an interview with a client’s family members (when necessary and only with the client’s consent), and completion of particular tasks or questionnaires. All of the evaluation measures used are scientifically validated and many are computerized. The findings of the assessment and specific recommendations are then provided to the client and/or authorized professionals such as lawyers, physicians, teachers or other therapists. Psychological assessments are useful for accurately diagnosing specific psychological problems and highlighting an individual’s areas of strength. Assessments can lead to recommendations for clients or referring professionals regarding treatment planning, capitalizing on a person’s strengths, and making helpful adjustments to a school or work environment. Assessments are frequently used to determine an individual’s intellectual functioning or IQ, recognize learning disabilities, or evaluate the severity of problems such as depression or anxiety.

Psychological or Psycho-educational AssessmentClients are referred for psychological assessment by parents, teachers, physicians, lawyers, and insurance companies. Psychological assessments can be useful in medical-legal contexts to help ascertain the presence or absence of psychological disorders, the causes of these disorders, and recommended treatment options.

Our psychologists have many years’ experience conducting medical-legal assessments, including assessments requested by third parties for the determination of disability and planning of vocational rehabilitation. Our use of evidence-based methods of practice is an asset when we serve as consultants and expert witnesses within medical-legal contexts.
